چکیده

Environmental Health Perspectives • volume 119 | number 8 | August 2011 A 331 and are uncertain about why community members are dying from what appear to the survivors to be unusual causes. Although Hrudey may feel this concern is misplaced or unfounded, that opinion does not reflect the feelings of those who live in Fort Chipewyan. The Alberta government’s assertion that more extensive health studies are warranted (Chen 2009) and stated intention to actively pursue such studies (Weinhold 2011) suggest adverse health effects are at least plausible.

Neurotoxicity of Brominated Flame Retardants: (In)direct Effects of Parent and Hydroxylated Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers on the (Developing) Nervous System

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated (OH-) or methoxylated forms have been detected in humans. Because this raises concern about adverse effects on the developing brain, we reviewed the scientific literature on these mechanisms. DATA SYNTHESIS Many rodent studies reported behavioral changes after developmental, neonatal, or adult exposure to PBDEs...

Decomposition of PBDEs by Direct Photolysis in Marine Surface Waters

Large quantities of brominated flame retardants (BFR) are produced and used in every day consumer products (D’silva et al. 2004 and Hites 2004). Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE) are most commonly used BFRs. The function of the PBDEs is to prevent ignition or slow burning and this way save human lives and reduce economical loss. Unfortunately PBDEs have spread ubiquitously in environment, w...

Temporal Trends of Brominated Flame Retardants and Other Emerging POPs in Waters around East Asia: Retrospective Studies Using Archived Samples from es-Bank, Ehime University, Japan

Introduction Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a group of compounds that are added to a wide range of products, such as printed circuit boards, computer cases, electronic appliances, automobiles and construction materials to prevent the outbreak of fire. Among them, additive flame retardants like polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are the focus of cu...
